Grammar

spent/had spent, saw/had seen

Dear members

I couldn't date with the girl because I spent all my money last Sunday.

The driver tried to stop the car when he saw a strange object in the middle of the road.

Could I change the underlined words "spent" and "saw" to "had spent" and "had seen"?

Thanks in advance
