After losing her son, she spent years suffering from mental pain and distress.
... she suffered from mental pain and distress for many years.

Do both of the above sound right and mean about the same to you? Thanks.
BTW, do "mental pain" amount to "distress?" If yes, are they redundant? Thanks.
