Spend/Be Busy + Ing

I've learnt that spend/be busy is a set phrase.

But what do you think of this?


He spent so much of the next twenty-five years involved in art that he ignored his official duties.

I was busy engaged in political campaigns.

I was busy involved in church.


They are not present participles but past participles.

Past participles are also OK.

Actually, you don't need any participles at all.

He spent most of his life in Chicago.
He spent the afternoon at home.
He spent 10 years in prison.
