spend [on]

I spent 3 hours this morning [on] balancing company XYZ's account.

Is it fine to add 'on' into the sentence? Could you explain when spend requires the preposition on?

Thanks!

If we consider just time, does the version with on usually imply that the action is not completed? For example,

I spent 1 hour on mowing the front lawn.

I spent 2 hours on fixing my car radiator this morning.
