Spelled-out telephone numbers in quoted dialogue

Don't know if this is possible, but I'll ask anyway. Does anybody know the correct way to spell out telephone numbers in quoted dialogue? This, yet, is another edit I have to complete for work. Ridiculous!! I cannot use the numbers in quotes.

Lisa said, “I can be reached at area code six one seven, five five six, eight one three nine.”

Joe said, “My telephone number is six five three, three six eight nine.”

How in the heck do I write this?!?!

Any help is appreciated!!!

There is no "correct" way to do any of the things you've been asking about. If your boss thinks there is, he's even more deluded than it seems. There is only convention to go by, or whatever style guide you should be using for the material you're writing, such as the Chicago Manual of Style for general American writing and the AP Stylebook for American journalism.

  • Chicago is silent on telephone numbers written as words, and I expect that any other guide would be, too, since that's a stupid way to write them.
  • Convention is no help, either.
