Spellchecker has dramatically improved my spelling

For years, I have set my word processor to underline the words I spell incorrectly (and NOT to automatically correct them). When a word is spelled improperly, I keep poking my keyboard until the line goes away. With this little method of subjecting myself to positive and negative reinforcement, I have learned to spell many words correctly. Even when I use the spellchecker dialogue box, I give myself at least 20-30 seconds of trying to come up with the correct spelling myself before of looking at the suggestions.

In part, I attribute it to a very traditional education as a very young kid English grammar and spelling rammed into my head several times a week as a 7-year-old and Latin, for ***'s sake.

  • I get all curmudgeonly about the illiteracy of today's 7-year-olds.

I do sometimes slip, and there are words that I can never write without having to think about them (accommodate, for one), and I am no typist,
