Speed / Speeds

Are both of these correct? What do they mean? I cannot tell the difference between them?

1. While I was riding my bicycle downhill, I reached speeds of 70 kilometers an hour. (This is the one I saw in the newspaper, why not use the singular 'speed' ?)

2. While I was riding my bicycle downhill, I reached a speed of 70 kilometers an hour.

Thanks.
