Speculate on//think about the reason

Anna refuses to speculate on the reason why her teacher dislike her.

Does "speculate on" in the above amount to "think about?" Thanks.

I'd say not. Thinking may or may not involve speculation. You could think about something for several days and never get to the "speculation" stage, which I'd describe as proposing (to yourself or others) an explanation as to why a certain thing is so.

Edit. I suppose "considering" an explanation would also qualify as speculation.
