Spectacles versus glasses

Hi,

I am trying to find out if there is any difference in the terms "spectacles" and "glasses" (do spectacles refer to a certain type of glasses?), and why the term "spectacles" is rarely used anymore. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I generally think of 'spectacles' as being an old-fashioned term, not used much these days. I would use it only if I were using a crackling, shaking and aging voice for effect.
