Through university period of time we have to pass some basic, general, and specialized courses? For example, in software engineering filed of study we have to finish maths and physics courses that are called general courses. After that we have courses like database or machine language. I'm not sure if it is right to call them specialized courses. Do you know a better phrase for that kind of lessons that are closely connected to the filed of study?
What about advanced courses?

The university course catalogs I just looked at used "upper-division" courses. This was for junior and senior level courses in a variety of majors.

"specialized courses" sounds reasonable to me. Actually, I have never heard of "upper-division" courses. Possibly it is a term used in the US but not here in the UK, though I am happy to be corrected.
