Vocabulary

specialist vs expert

it seems that 'expert' is often used to title the persons who are proficient in a certain area, while 'specialist' is a word in a more ordinary way, is this right?

Thanks

A specialist simply works in one area in particular. It doesn't automatically mean that the person has extensive knowledge of that area. A new student could decide to specialize in a area of study, without yet having a lot of knowledge.

An expert has extensive knowledge or skills.

Thanks for the replies. So expert is usually supposed to be at a high level in that area? to what degree? i mean 'advanced' or nearly 'supreme', or just 'quite experienced'?

thanks

by the way, "expertise" can only be referred as the skills at a expert level, or both expert and ordinary one?

Thanks

An expert is someone whose expertise in something is pratically unbeatable, a specialist is someone who is specialised in something, but they are not necessarily an expert in it

Expert and specialist are both same. Specialist means he has the extensive knowledges and expert means he knows various way of using that knowledge in a productive manner.

An Expert has the knowledge and skills captured from what he/she did or worked in (job, internship, experience, ...) while a specialist is someone who followed one study or one subject in his/her study. Specialist is done sometimes after bachelor's degree.
