Spatter or splatter

Hi,

I’m still a bit confused as to what the real difference between ‘spatter’ and ‘splatter’ is.

“The painter spattered/splattered paint onto our dining table.”

“We need to wipe paint spatter/splatter off the furniture that wasn’t fully covered.”

“I was moving the paint roller up and down the fence too vigorously and I ended up spattering/splattering paint onto my face.”

Thank you.
