Spanish

Should it be:

We've been taught Spanish in middle school. Or

We were taught Spanish in middle school.

I pick the second.

Top answer

PreciousJones I pick the second. Good choice. Did you notice the time gap between 1 when you learned Spanish and 2 the moment you say this?

  • PreciousJones I pick the second.
  • Good choice.
  • Did you notice the time gap between 1 when you learned Spanish and 2 the moment you say this?
  • Also, "in middle school" is very close to being an expression of time, and the present perfect doesn't go with specific mentions of time.

If you are in middle school now, you can use the first.

"Our school district does things very oddly. In elementary school we were taught French. In middle school we've been taught Spanish. In high school, we'll be taught German."

But for most people, it will be the second one.
