Spaces in these two terms

There are certain words that are two words combined, and I was wondering if someone could tell me if the terms "schoolboy" and "schoolgirl" mean the same thing when written as two, i.e., "school boy" and "school girl," with a space, or is it grammatically incorrect to make them two words instead of one?

Thanks.

I wouldn't say they're grammatically incorrect, but seeing them with a space just looks wrong, as they've been accepted as standard for so many years. Rover

They are simply misspellings.
