Spaces between sentences

Recently proofing english papers for a college freshman. I noticed he was only using ONE space between sentences and informed it should always be TWO. He told me he has been informed by two instructors to only use one space between sentences.

Has the standard of two spaces between sentences been abolished and it is now proper to only use one??

Yes, I think that standard is on the way out. I've read that two spaces was a requirement for type-setters, and that modern wordprocessing has made this obsolete. Also, I couldn't help noticing that you've written one space between sentences in your question.

  • I know I shouldn't nitpick, as this forum does not really resemble a college essay, but I'd like to know what was the reason given when you were taught this?
  • I've never used two spaces, and I've been out of university for six years, and always thought those that did were a little eccentric (until I discovered the type-setting reason).
