Spaces after period and colon??

One or two spaces after a sentence-ending period?

One or two spaces after a colon?

I've seen people put two spaces after each.

In my typing classes 100 years ago, we were taught that two spaces follow both the colon and the period. With today's margin tab for filling out to the margins, the spacing is sometimes automatically changed.
