Speech & Pronunciation

Southwark

How do you pronounce that? The examples at Forvo are from non-rhotic Londoners, and my ears not being what they were, I can't tell if the r is having any effect at all. Would a rhotic speaker put an r in there?

k/. The first pronunciation is more common for Southwick, the second for Southwark. As these are the pronunciations used by everybody who knows these places, anyone inserting an /r/ in Southwark would sound very strange.

In BrE, both Southwick (Hampshire) and Southwark (London) are pronounced /'s?ð?k/ or /'s?ð?k/. The first pronunciation is more common for Southwick, the second for Southwark.

Thanks. My faith in my ears has been slightly restored.
