South or south/ North or north?

When I am refering to geography do I need to capitalize it in the sentence or not?

For example: The North centered its prejudice on the Irish and other immigrants?

Should it be North or north? Emotion: smile

Let me try to explain it. I think that in this sentence you must write North. In other case (for common noun) you should use north.
