South and Southern (Guest:Vjda50401)

When writing of directions and places, when do I use south and when is southern correct?

One thing I know is that you use uppercase S if south or southern is part of a proper name. If you are simply referring to a direction from the south, then you would use lowercase s . For example: - I do not live in South Carolina.
