Sounds in fiction

Hello!

A quick question.

What is the correct way to write a sound which is not spoken in fiction?

Is it:

"Clunk!" "What was that!" He said turning his head.

Clunk! "What was that!" He said turning his head.

CLUNK! "What was that!" He said turning his head.

or just

Clunk. "What was that!" He said turning his head.

In other words should a sound, vs the description of a sound, be in quotation marks?

Thanks!

Not in quotation marks, but I believe I have seen both the italics and the all-caps in various works of fiction. Ask you editor or teacher what s/he wants to see.
