Sounded in the distance

Hello...

A shot sounded in the distance.

Can this have two meanings?

1. I heard a shot and I could infer from the sound that the shot was in the distance.

2. In a distant place, a shot was fired and I heard it.

The difference that I am thinking is...

#1 seems to be the same meaning with "A shot sounded to be in the distance".
And similarly “He sounded in good health”.

#2 is seems to be the same meaning with “In the distance, a shot was fired”.

And I am not sure if this is natives’ sens of English....
Maybe it’s just splitting hairs...
