SOS consonant sound - Why "an" before it?

hello,

sorry, i'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but this is to do with pronuncation.

Why is the article "an" used before the consonant sound S in SOS? (an SOS signal)

I thought "an" is used before a vowel sound?

Is this an exception?

thanks for the help.

Hi, SOS has each letter said individually, ie 'esss oh esss'. You have to consider the sound that the letter represents. The letter 's' sounds like 'esss', ie it starts with a vowel sound .
