Sort and solve

Hallo,
I just would like to ask the forum if sort and solve can be considered as synonyms. I'm not saying sort out just sort. And also can sort be applied to a major problem? For instance, does the sentence below sound right?

We can no longer afford the mortgage payment nor are we able to sell the property, how can we sort this problem?

Thanks for any help
Maurice

No. I think it should be sort out. It is a standard phrase sort sth out, meaning solve.

Sort and solve are not synonymous.
"Sort out" and solve can be in used in the context you have provided, but "sort" alone is not correct.
