Which view do you support?

1. Linguistics' discussions should be about stating one's case and allowing others to do the same and healthy debate should not follow.

Tricky situation. Some people are so fixated on a particular viewpoint that it's a losing battle to debate them. If I detect that attitude I shut up and let it lie. On the other hand, debate and silence aren't the only o

I wouldn't be interested in definitions; least of all, my own.

But if I knew the other party's/parties' notions of the nature and purpose of a "linguistics discussion", I would then be happy to assess which of the prescriptions in the original post were likely to bring it about.
