Last year, I asked an English history teacher about the pronunciation "Sophia". The Sophia in question was the mother of King George I.
He said that "Sophia" is pronounced /s&(u)'fai&/.
"Sofia", on the other hand, is pronounced /'s&ufi&/ or even /s&(u)'fi:&/.

I later looked up both name in a pronouncing dictionary and confirmed those answers.
