Objective:
My Objective for graduate studies in Computer Science is to get involved in the journey of a true knowledge discovery by research. I have fostered a strong passion to become a scientist and pursue research in Social Computing domain. The joy of working on unnoticed problems and the uncertainty of results have always captivated me to work on research projects. Being curious and thirst to attain an in-depth knowledge of academic courses has satisfied my appetite as a student. This has thoroughly reflected in my brilliant career, securing first class in Bachelor’s degree (Information Technology) and the first rank in Master of Engineering (Software Systems) with a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 9.22/10.

Academic Background:
In academics, I worked on numerous research projects in the field of Pervasive Computing, Information retrieval, Mobile Computing, Software Architecture and Real Time Systems. My quest for research began with the academic project to optimize Instantaneous Utilization Factor (IUF) real time scheduling algorithm and to innovate a way in which a CPU scheduler works. I lead a team, which helped reduce the response time, context switch time and increase schedulability with modified IUF algorithm. The acquaintance with the value of research increased gradually but firmly in me which escalated my thirst to pursue higher studies. I undertook a research in the field of Software Architecture by proposing a XML extension to an Architectural Description Language (xADL) for scenario based risk analysis. My curiosity with the theories applied to improve present systems persuaded me to carry out necessary project work which involved endless hours of investigation. I achieved highest project grades owing to the immense pleasure while working on the projects. I spontaneously applied for a research internship after completing the first year of master studies. Under the guidance of Prof. ***, I proposed a new algorithm for query disambiguation using singular value decomposition and term frequency analysis. Having learnt the basic concepts from course ‘Information Retrieval’ I felt comfortable to work on query disambiguation problem. Unintentionally, working on research project sowed the seeds of my long term goal to be a researcher.

Professional experience:
During a research internship, I worked on optimizing open source Distributed File System (DFS), ‘***’, to support web scale search engines, at R&D group of ****; in collaboration with ****. The project involved annotating millions of web pages and storing them efficiently on 40 node storage cluster. I undertook the responsibility to tweak the hierarchical data allocation maps which I considerably optimized proving to be suitable for large web scale search engines. The outcome of the project improved the speed of Read operations by 36% and Write operation by 56%. Results helped me boost the confidence to take up research as a career path. Moreover, I worked in ****, for a year to deliver the core feature to save disk space and time by 50% compared to previous releases in ****. For me, the pursuit of happiness involved during research work satisfies my eager to know existing systems in a better way and also challenges my instincts. Being part of a core team at **** helped me understand the software development process and my academic background helped me connect the research and industry work.

Area of Interest & Independent projects:
While working on various projects as a part of academic course, ‘Pervasive Computing’, I was enthralled by the idea of building a User Centric Systems which will implicitly take care of the user. Study of Mark Weiser’s writing acquainted me with the beautiful nature of ubiquitous computing. That helped me develop better user-centric systems. One of my noteworthy pervasive computing based projects in year 2011, ‘*******’ is to detect an abrupt mechanical jerk and alert to emergency team. Intelligent part was to handle false positive inputs and to decide a threshold value properly. User centric projects are my primary focus and I wish to work on systems that take care of user implicitly.

At present, I am one of the core team members of a group ****** and have worked on independent wearable computing based research projects such as ‘*****’. Using Android Smartphone and stereoscopic 3D technique user is able to view 3D images, movies and games. A ‘*****’, is used to interpret finger motion and send data to mobile device wirelessly and then mobile application running at background analyzes the received data to trigger the action. Smart Gloves has accelerometer module and flex sensors which accurately detects the finger movement. While designing Smart Gloves, I have learnt various aspects of human hands and finger movements. I experimented with ***** keyboard layout to be used in Smart Gloves. Wearable computing based projects widened my knowledge of human anatomy and ability to solve the problems effectively. My further anxiety also fueled my ideas to develop an embedded mobile application which involved wired and wireless communication. Experimenting into various fields where computer science can reach is motive behind my independent research work.

Why Social Computing Group
At **** Research Institute, I strongly believe that my academic background and technical expertise will prove to be a mutually profitable addition. Given an opportunity I would like to contribute to the project, ‘****’, by developing wearable sensors, remotely monitoring the data and trigger preventive actions based on predicted events. Moreover, I found projects ‘****’, ‘****’ and ‘****’ equally interesting to work on. Research in the field of ‘Social Computing’ helps build better user-centric systems, which is my area of interest. Perusing the department’s research publications has strengthened my decision to apply at your esteemed *****.
I have realized that **** can provide me the ideal environment for inter-disciplinary research. Hence, my strongest desire is to be a part of ongoing research at ****.

I am aware of the hard work and perseverance required to be a researcher and I strongly believe that I have the right skills and aptitude to meet the challenge. My expertise of system programming, mobile application development and knowledge of building a complete system covering hardware modules in alliance with intelligent software applications will surely help me pursue an excellent research career at your esteemed lab.
