SOP for International Development and Management

Question

Hi,I am in the process of applying for the master program in internationa development and management and I am wondering if you could review my SOP. I have to make it 350 words which is now 514 words. considering issues are - I appreciate your comments.Best-----------------------------------------------Being a citizen of a least development country of South Asia I am aware of inequalities and development challenges from a young age. When I passed the entrance exam and decided to pursue a degree in Geography and Environment, my ultimate goal was to obtain the necessary academic knowledge, applied research methods, and tools to attempt to deal with the issues. Specially the issues which are surrounded and affected the poor people of my country.  During the study of B.Sc and M.Sc, I have studied a multidisciplinary subjects including Geography of Development, Gender Geography, Economic Geography, South Asia, Advance Research Techniques, Environment Management; that enhanced my knowledge and understanding of development issues. Though my B.Sc and M.Sc studies were definitely important in laying the academic foundation that I needed, the curriculum of the Geography and Environment major was not enough to provide me with the in-depth knowledge of development issues that I was looking for. In order to fill this gap, I sought to combine my studies with professional experiences that I served as volunteer and research assistant in development projects during my student life. And finaly after completion my study, I joined in development sector. In a summary, I have gathered around four years of professional experience in development sector with various and progressively increasing responsibilities, mainly focusing on DRR, proverty reduction, livelihoods, public health related development projects. Currently, I am working as Project Manager at Handicap International, an independent and impartial organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. I am responsible to lead the project implementation related to inclusive DRM, with responsibility for the implementation of the full project cycle, capacity development of partner organisations, team management, budget management, Monitoring & Evaluation and internal and external coordination. All of those experiences were crucial in reaching an understanding that I am most passionate about developmet and management. I see myself working as a top management position within an international agency such as the World Bank, UK Aid, ECHO, or the UN agencies at South Asian region especially in my country. In order to achieve this, it is essential to have advanced graduate studies on international development and management that combine practical experience with academic research excellence. I prefer europen study system to enrich my experience. After considerable research, I am sure that the XXX's Master of Science in International Development and Management, with its equal strengths in theoretical and practical skills is the best fit for my professional goals. Besides, studying in XXX offers unparalleled opportunities to build a strong network with international development professionals. I am aware that XXX attracts the best candidates in the field. However, given my history of commitment to the study of development issues, this is the only institution where I can see myself pursuing the advancement of my academic career. However, after completing studies I will return my country, and use skills and knowledge what I have learnt in XXX's Master of Science in International Development and Management to help better my country as well achieve my professional goals.

Though that was definitely important in laying the academic foundation that I needed, it was not enough to provide me with the in-depth knowledge of development issues that I was looking for. In order to fill this gap, I sought to gain practical experience and I started working as a volunteer and research assistant in various development projects, before getting my first job.

I now have around four years of professional experience in the development sector with various and responsibilities, mainly focusing on DRR, poverty reduction, livelihood improvement, and public health related development projects. Currently, I am working as project manager at Handicap International, an independent and impartial organization working to alleviate poverty, exclusion, conflict and disaster. Being a citizen of a most disaster prone country of the world I am aware of the adverse affects of disasters and climate change – especially high temperature, sea-level rise, floods, cyclones and storm surges, salinity intrusion, heavy monsoon downpours etc. has aggravated the overall development scenario of my country to a great extent. When I passed the entrance exam and decided to pursue a degree in Geography and Environment, my ultimate goal was to obtain the necessary academic concepts, methods and tools to attempt to deal with the issues, especially the climate change impact and disaster vulnerabilities.

During the study of B.Sc and M.Sc, I have studied a variety subjects, which enhanced my knowledge and understanding of the DRM & CCA issues. Though my B.Sc and M.Sc studies were definitely important in laying the academic foundation that I needed, it was not enough to provide me with the in-depth knowledge of DRM & CCA issues that I was looking for. In order to fill this gap, I sought to gain practical experience and I started working as a volunteer and research assistant in various projects, before getting my first job.

I now have around four years of professional experience with various and responsibilities, mainly focusing on resilience, disaster risk management, disaster risk reduction, resilient livelihoods, climate change adaptation related projects. I worked for the poorest among the poor and remotest among the remote. I worked in the southern part of my country which is the most effected in cyclones, salinity intrusion and water-logging; and also worked in the northern part which is the most affected in flood and river erosion. I went to the places where the affected people start their new life after the disaster. I have supported them in emergency relief and recovery assistance, community risk and vulnerability assessment, risk reduction & contingency planning, resilience building initiatives, capacity building of disaster management committees and institutions, resilient livelihoods support and promote community and school based disaster preparedness initatives. It was an enriching experience that furthered my theoretical and practical knowledge about the nature of disaster risk management and climate change adaptation, which is indeed motivational for me.

However, I am currently working as Project Manager – Inclusive Disaster Risk Management at Handicap International, an international non-profit and humanitarian organization (a noble peace prize winner in 1997) working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster.
