Hi, I am in the process of applying for the master program in Humanitarian Action and Conflict and I am wondering if you could review my SOP. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My interest in obtaining a Master Degree in Humanitarian field aroused as an outcome of my last four years of work in different national and international non-governmental organizations working in the field of humanitarian and disaster management. Although, having B.Sc and M.Sc in Geography and Environment I wished to work in the field where I could contribute to save lives, alleviate human suffering, and maintain human dignity. Hence, since 2011 I have worked in the humanitarian and disaster management sector, and obtained hands-on expertise in humanitarian response, emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction, emergency livelihoods and poverty alleviation related aspects.
I have worked with different humanitarian organizations in different environments and capacities ranging from Volunteer to Project Manager, my major task was to support humanitarian assistance to the disaster affected communities as well as how to be prepared and return to the normal life . I worked with populations who have experienced disasters (floods, cyclone, river erosion, water-logging and forced migration) and I aimed to educate them on how to be prepare for disaster (e.g. dealing with community, making them aware of emergency response preparedness, risk reduction and contingency planning, community based disaster preparedness, emergency livelihoods and emergency in education issues). By working on different projects, interacting with diversified communities, and international donors, I learnt in detail about humanitarian sector and have developed leadership, coordination, monitoring, and project management skills. In addition, I also challenge myself by working in remote areas of Bangladesh. It realizes me that I am successfully contributing in humanitarian sector and brining change in marginalized groups, which is indeed motivational for me.
I believe XXX University’s Master Programme in Humanitarian Action and Conflict, with its equally strong theoretical and practical aspects, will enrich my experience and help me achieve my career goals. Besides, the programme focuses on taking an independent, critical and constructively active approach to humanitarian work will definitely help me improve my humanitarian project management skills.
I am aware that XXX University’s Master Programme in Humanitarian Action and Conflict attracts the best candidates in the field. However, given my history of commitment to the study of humanitarian issues, this is the only institution where I can see myself pursuing the advancement of my career. After completing studies, I will return my country and use the skills and knowledge I will have learnt in your master programme to help better my country as well achieve my professional goals.
