Can we use 'sooner than' like this?

The lockdown would kill me sooner than the virus would.

Can we use 'sooner than' like this? Yes. But I'd prefer to say 'faster than'.

But why have you chosen to say 'would'?

Thanks, Clive. Not quite. I don't mean it as a hypothetical scenario. I mean something like this:

In early 2020, cynics warned us that the lockdown would kill us sooner than the virus would. (past tense)

At the moment, cynics are warning us that the lockdown will kill us sooner than the virus will. (present tense)
