My first impulse is A for the principle that the verb behind a preposition should be transformed into a gerund. So could you tell me why D is right?

Infinitives can be nouns, too.

Bertrand Russell — 'Most people would sooner die than think; in fact, they do so.'

Is this an exception? Because, normally, infinitives should emerge as form of 'to do'. Or could you consummate the whole sentence? Is it 'Most people would sooner die (rather) than think', namely, the 'than' is equal to 'rather than' here?

That's a good idea. Maybe so.
