"Son", or "daughter"?

A senior can speak to a young man: Son, there is more about the picture...
But when the senior speaks to a girl, should he/she say "Daughter..."? Or still "Son..."?

Top answer

We do not address daughters as 'Son'. Sons are always male, daughters always female.

The senior authority should not refer to the woman to whom he is talking as son or daughter.

The case you brought forward is an example of typical patronizing interplay between different rank males.

Thank you.
Just say "Girl.." then?

No. We address people by their names. Depending on the practice in the company, Margaret Smith is addressed as 'Margaret', 'Ms/Miss/Mrs Smith' or, if appropriate, 'Dr Smith'.
