'sometimes' in a continuous tense

Hello,

Is it correct to use 'sometimes' with a continuous tense, like in example 1? I've been always taught that 'sometimes' goes with the simple tenses. Thank you for clarifying my doubts.

1) Sometimes people put things off because of the fear of another failure, and sometimes they are just going through some difficulties.
