Is it possible to say "something is required to realize" (by consciousness), or would it have to be "something is required to be realized"?

Gosh, grammar folks and their contexts. It always has to be from a generic repertoire, or else they're stumped. I guess I also have to mention that my last post was in reply to a request for context and not me making a statement (which would be weird).

I guess I don't understand what it's supposed to mean exactly.
