something has to give way

1. What does "something has to give way" mean?

2. ?Does the red highlighted sentence mean "even the possibility of the occurrence of such encounters everywhere, makes everything more unbearable"?

if, as you stop at one of the many intersections and peer down a particular axis, someone walks into view and your gazes momentarily meet, either one or the other invariably feels compelled immediately to move on. In other words, in order to dispel the sense of uncertainty that arises around the status of the exchange, and so as not to be misunderstood, something has to give way. The available space is too confined, rendering any such meeting of gazes unbearable, but somehow the weight of that which haunts the scene makes it all the more so.

Specifically in this situation, "someone has to stop gazing at the other and move on".
More generally the meaning is that one of two (or more) forces has to yield to the other(s).
More informally in American English, something's gotta (got to) give.
