Something had to give

What does it mean?

Nancy is the mother, and Andy the kid, who's now 18.

Nancy just got out of prison after 3 years.

Nancy: You're going to live here?

Andy: You don't sound so happy.

Nancy: Oh no, I'm happy, It's just that things are different now, really different. I'm not going to be..., you are grown-ups.

Andy :Retiring for motherhood? I knew something had to give.

Nancy: No, everyone needs to be responsible for themselves is all.

Andy: What do you think we've been doing for the past 3 years.

Can you give me other examples of how to use "something has to give"?

Thank you
