Vocabulary

Something from the restaurant in US.

Hi guys,
please if the waitress in the restaurant say, to her boss e.g: "I just sat a 12-top."
Does it mean...I just received an order on the 12 dishes? Or does it mean something else?
thanks
Best Regards

Hi, This must be waitress jargon. I've never heard it. I'd guess it means 'I have just seated 12 customers at a table for 12'.

It's possible that "top" could mean "boss". i.e. top of the chain of command.

A party of twelve. A group of twelve people (seated together in a restaurant).

This former waitress confirms.

That's a huge party.

The table itself (not only the people) is also referred to as a "top." e.g., Try not to sit couples at four-tops during our rush period.
