Something from the big ship caught

As their ship was sailing away from the big ship, something from the big ship caught and broke the main mast of thier boat.

Hi,

What does "caught" in the above mean? Is it "stuck?" Thanks.

Hi,

No, 'hit'.

Possibly 'trapped', 'ensnared', with the idea that the main mast got tangled in something on the big ship.

eg As she got up from the table, her sleeve caught her cup and knocked it to the floor.
