If you say, "Something begins like normal with ...," do you mean "Something begins normally with ..."?

I'd say that "like normal " is more informal than "normally", but whether or not it is more appropriate in a news article is a question you would have to ask the editor of the newspaper. It all depends upon what style the paper wishes to use.
