Vocabulary

something after negation

Dear teachers,

am I allowed (= is it possible) to use something in the following sentence?

We didn't always have something to eat or drink during our trip.

"anything" sounds like double-negative?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Asterix We didn't always have something to eat or drink during our trip. Yes, that's fine. It means you didn't pack any food or drink to take along, and you didn't stop at a place to eat.

No. "anything" is used in place of "nothing" in order to avoid a double negative.

They didn't want nothing to eat. (Wrong. Double negative.)
They didn't want anything to eat. (Correct. Not a double negative.)
