someone please let me know

This is a question of how to use articles. I do not understand why "The" is the answer for this sentence. I would appreciate if someone could explain this.

question: ____chair is ____ useful piece of furniture.

answer: The chair is a useful piece of furniture.

Desafinado I do not understand why "The" is the answer for this sentence. It doesn't have to be 'the' (which is used before 'chair' as a concept for a sitting aid). 'A' is also a good answer; it is used when 'chair' refers to any chair.

Thank you, Mister Micawber. I had difficulty understanding the reason why this should be "the". But it is crystal clear now.
