I am writing in response to your article about the use of complementary alternative medicine, shown in your magazine. Initially, although the writer has a point I cannot agree with the comment that this trend is a stupidity. No matter how strange it may seem complementary alternative medicine is largely used by many people due to the fact that they find these health care alternatives to be more congruent with their own values, beliefs, and philosophical orientations toward health and life.
In particular, I reckon that many patients are more informed of alternative therapies than their physicians, a situation that, in it, should encourage them to learn more about the alternative medicine. No matter how a physician or a doctor feels about the usefulness of the alternative medicine, it is no longer adequate simply to ignore the patients' questions with an uninformed answer; doing so only serves to broaden the communication gap between the public and the medical community.
As regards the second view in your magazine, I agree to some extent, but I believe that people must be able to choose any form of treatment as long as they have been assisted by experienced doctors and practitioners with expertise in both areas (conventional or complementary). Some therapies are not accepted or available in some countries while others can enable people to be treated by any kind of conventional or unconventional therapy alongside clinical treatments.
On the other hand, I believe that it is vital that a scientific explanation must be given about the therapy used during a specific treatment. Everybody should be made aware of the pros and cons involved in all kinds of therapies.
Overall, I am absolutely convinced about the efficacy of some therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy. I was in treatment for 5 years in order to heal anxiety and back problems. It helped me to feel more relaxed and calm, mainly when I faced stressful situations at work and school. Studies have proven that people suffering from neurosis caused by these conditions have significantly improved their outlook in life.
