Somehow

Hi,

What does 'somehow' mean in the sentence?

I somehow fumbled my way through Spain without knowing a single word of Spanish.

Does 'somehow' mean the same as 'one way or another'?

Thanks.

yeah it is the same... in some way not yet known or the thing must be done somehow. It is up to you how to use the two words in a sentence.

Thank you begae. But what does 'somehow' mean here?

Hi,

Could anyone please help me with my question above? Thanks.

Here, it basically means "in some unknown or not further described manner, by some means". 'One way or another' also often means "using any method available", so be careful how you use that.

Hi ferdis,

Do you mean the author didn't know what methods he used? I think that sounds very strange becuase that have already happened and he should know how he fumbled his way through Spain.

Do you mean one way or another and somehow are different?

Thanks a lot.

Basically, yes. He fumbled his way through Spain without knowing a single word of Spanish, and he is not entirely sure how he managed to do that exactly. Compare this to "I somehow caused it to stop working"; you did something to make it stop working, but you don't really know what.

I'm struggling to find good examples of 'one way or another' versus 'somehow'. They can mean the same thin

Hi ferdis,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Can 'somehow' here in my sentence mean the latter "not further described "?

Hi,

If you were going to continue bt describing the way, you'd be unlikely to say 'somehow'.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi Clive,

Thanks for your comment.

Do you think 'somehow' here can mean either 'in some way not yet known or 'in some way not stated' without further context? Or it only means 'in some way not stated' here?

No. It's not strange. Sometimes people accomplish something, but they can't explain exactly how they did it.
