ONE MORE YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL-ESSAY

Would you like your son, daughter, brother, or sister lose one entire year of his or her life? Of course no! Believe it or not, there are educators who support the idea of adding one more year to high school period; they argue five years instead of four. On the other hand, other educators defend to preserve the current term of four years. Both prepositions have advantages and disadvantages. At this point, I steadily feel, according to my personal experience, that extending high school one more year has reasonable disadvantages to take into account; such as, the loss of one year in students’ adult life and interest in attending school, and generation of a useless time during this elongating time. It is very clear that one more year in high school has as a result of one year less in the students’ adult life.

One missed year in the students’ adult life as product of one more year in high school is not acceptable. The current high school period allows students to finish high school at the average age of eighteen years old; if it is added the four years colleges, the students become professionals at the average age of 22 years old. However, if it is added an extra year to high school term, the average age to become a professional would be 23 years old. This difference of one year means that students would live one year less from their professional life, which represent one year of not receiving salary, about fifty thousand dollars, in clear detriment of their pockets. Likewise, one year less in their adult life would attempt against the students’ personal progress to face the present society, which demand increasingly personal and professional experience. One example of this scenario has just occurred with my niece and nephew, both at the same age; my nephew fell sick and delayed one year to recover from his illness, and he suffered the same consequences I am describing in this paragraph just for losing one year in high school. One more year in high school is not an applicable idea since students would also lose their interest in school.

To lack of interest in school for part of students due to the additional year in high school would be a grave situation for the educational system. Nowadays, if with the high school’s four years the dropout and absences rate are very high, around 20%, with one extra year this rate would suffer a significant increment. Another not despicable factor is related to the students’ performance reflected in their lower grade-point-average-magic number to get the college entrance and respective scholarship; this factor would be affected just for the students demotivation. These adverse circumstances would affect not only the students’ education level and the educational system, but also their personal’s lifestyle due of their educational diminution. To these bad consequences produced by the loss of one year of their professional life and the decrement of interest in school due to the accumulation of an extra-curricular year in high school, there is another worrying setting to discuss, which is very close related to the good use of this supplementary school time for part of the seniors.

The effective use of the time is very significant in the school since it will see reflected in the students’ future. Nonetheless, if it is added an extra year to high school, students would undergo the consequences for this lengthening period. At present, the truth is that students are motivated until the third year of high school since the fourth year belongs exclusively to live the known “senioritis year” that most seniors are very concentrated in a waiting time either to receive the acceptance college entrance or the graduation day, this is without counting with events proper to this “senioritis year” like assemblies, graduation preparation, year book, etc. So, students in this year are not doing something else significant rather than waiting and waiting. If would have an extra year, like some educators support, seniors would have not only one year of “senioritis,” but also two years of “senioritis.” In this condition and daunting situation of the life school extension, seniors would feel bored losing their concentration and employing their time in other actions rather than catching much knowledge. Therefore, the prolongation of the high school life would carry ineffective consequences not only for the students and their families, but also for the educational system and the society in general.

As I have mentioned, one year extension in the high school term would carry only negative consequences; such as, the students would have one year less in their adult life losing money and experience; and they would be demotivated to attend school causing awesome statistics in dropouts and absences; and they would produce an ineffective performance during this longer period. Therefore, nobody in this world ought to think about this silly idea of squandering one year of life just by adding one year in high school time because it is against the students, educational system, society, and the country at all.
