“A Thousand Splendid Suns” part 2 Respond

In part 2 of a story “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini, the story circulates around Laila’s life. Laila’s background is much better than Mariam’s. Since Laila’s parents, Hakim and Fariba, are civilized people, Laila is properly educated. However, like other families in Afghanistan, her family also suffers great losses because of the cruel wars. After the death of her brothers, her mother is completely stressed out; she does not do anything but stay in her bedroom all day. At very young age, Laila has to wield the burden of taking care of her household. Unfortunately, her parents are also killed because of the war, leaving her by herself. In addition, Laila has her eye on a neighbor boy named Tariq, who is handicapped. Tariq has had an artificial leg because he stepped on a land mine when he was five. Part 2 in the story surrounds this young couple’s flourishing relationship as different regimes take control of Afghanistan causing many grieves.

Unlike part 1 in “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, part 2 describes the isolation of the country because of the wars. Hossenini is revealing to us how wars destroy homes and dreams of families. For instance, Laila’s family is an exemplary family. They are highly educated and culturally engaged, yet wars destroy their properties and take away their innocent lives. Furthermore, Hossenini also illustrates to us the struggling of lovers who live during war times such as Laila and Tariq. They have to sacrifice their love for their families. Tariq has to leave Afghanistan and Laila cannot abandon her family. This story makes its reader sympathy with the people who are living in war zones.

“A Thousand Splendid Suns” is a sad story. It involves with unfortunate people who suffer because of unfair society and a series of absurd wars. In part 2, we can see through Laila and Tariq’s families that not all family and marital relations were like that of Rasheed and Mariam or even Mariam’s mother and Jalil; not all marriages are abusive, domineering, shaming, and controlling in Afghanistan.
