I don't understand anything by either of those.

You need to know the difference between "make an impression" and "form an impression".

You can "make an impression" (on someone), "make a good impression", or "make a bad impression", but you have to stop there. You can't add "of something". Making an impression is like "sending" the impression to other people. Marilyn made a good impression during her audition. (The judges liked her performance.)

But you "form an impression" (of someone). That's when another person "sends" the impression to you.
