While a large number of people assume that longer imprisonment sentences will help deter crime, some believe in other methods. Despite the fact that the former is useful to some extent, I would argue that there are more effective ways to solve the problem.

Convincing arguments can be made that sending criminals behind bars for a long period is efficient. Firstly, petty crimes such as shoplifting or robbery are more unlikely to be committed, as a purse or a necklace one stole from another is not worthy compared to the punishment. Secondly, tougher sentences can act as a deterrent, particularly to youngsters. Since the aforementioned minor crimes are often seen amongst students or pupils, a long-lasting prison sentence can have devastating effects on their future. That is the reason why a young man will not risk his life and family on a small offence.

However, several measures can be taken to tackle the problem in a more effective manner. In terms of serious offences such as murder or smuggling, the best way to punish criminals is undoubtedly the death penalty. For example, a serial killer who took 5 lives of a family in Vietnam caused great outrage amongst people because he was not sentenced to death. According to the public, murderers, regardless of their motive, must pay for their sin. Execution will make the best example so as to prevent people from offending such crime. In addition, petty criminals can be forced to attend rehabilitation programs or vocational training courses instead of staying in jail. Planting trees or collecting garbage out on the streets can help them understand the value of labor and try to become an honest person in the future.

To sum up, while many are in favor of imposing longer prison sentences on lawbreakers to reduce crime, I believe that there are more effective ways to do so.
