Genetically modified (GM) crops are a controversial topic, which leads to intense public debate. This genetic engineering is supposed to make beneficial progress, whereas others believe it is prone to bring about hazards to either humans or the environment. This essay reveals valid arguments on both sides.
On the one hand, it is undisputed that food technology brings about a bunch of advances. Firstly, GM crops are proven to be a sustainable form to boost productivity. To be more specific, thanks to agricultural biotechnology, farmers can produce huge amounts of food in a shorter time period and with less cost leading to a lucrative income for them and a huge increase in food production. Secondly, plants with adjusted genomes not only can be more resistant to disease or insects by themselves but also can be cultivated well even in rigors of climate such as boiling hot weather or bitterly cold one.
On the other hand, food species that have been genetically modified are likely to have long-term deleterious influences on either people or environment. Firstly, in terms of consumers’ health, genetically modified crops have been recognized to have antibiotic properties put into them to make them immune to certain diseases. Thus, when people eat these foods, these properties are left in people’s bodies and can undermine a number of antibiotics’ effects as well as their immune systems. In other words, mankind has a high likelihood of health issues like allergies and even cancer. Secondly, genetic engineering contributes to environmental contamination. The excessive use of herbicides and pesticide in GM crops is not environmentally friendly, which means these substances are absorbed and retained in farming soil posing alteration in the whole ecosystems.
In conclusion, although GM crops have their obvious progresses, they present several potential hazards.
