Opinions are divergent regarding the purpose of learning a second language. Some people argue that the sole reason is to increase learners’ chances of working or traveling abroad, whereas opponents of this view maintain that there are manifold reasons for new language acquisition. From my perspective, I concur with the latter opinions, and the rationales for my belief will be elaborated below.
First and foremost, it is undeniable that mastering a foreign language plays a vital role if one desires to have a trip or a career overseas. Regarding traveling, language barriers may act as a deterrent to travelers’ completely fulfilling vacation due to their inability to grasp what the residents say and communicate with them, leading to diminishing pleasure. The situation even deteriorates when one person follows an occupation in a foreign country without the ability to communicate in its national language, which results in unproductivity and a lack of sympathy among colleagues. Therefore, numerous firms require international employees to have a certificate of fluency in a language, IELTS for example.
Nevertheless, the incentives for people to acquire a new language vary. For one thing, it enables them to broaden their horizons of knowledge. To illustrate, since English has long been considered a global language, an immeasurable amount of articles, and papers,... is written in English, making it possible for fluent English speakers to get easier access to the huge quantity of knowledge and gain much deeper insights. Furthermore, language can function as a link to connect citizens worldwide, thus bolstering unity and making our world a global village.
In conclusion, I firmly believe this kind of learning brings about many benefits. Not only does it help people to have a more meaningful trip and successful career outside of their home country, but it also contributes to one’s knowledge expansion and close-knitted relationships among citizens all over the world.
