For a country, being both economically successful and having an unpolluted environment are impossible. While this thinking may be valid to a certain extent, I think the opposite is more reasonable.
On the one hand, it is unrealistic for a national to be both economically advanced and have a clean environment. To develop an economy, a country consumes lots of fuel such as oil, coal, gas.. This leads to environmental pollution, affect on lives of people. For example, the economic boom in China has increased waste chemical influence on the environment, especially pollution in soil, water and air. Moreover, recent emission in China is higher in the US.
On the other hand, I think a country can achieve economic success as well as clean nature. Other countries, governments consider protecting the environment as a task in developing economic-social policy. For instance, Singapore is one of the most environmentally clean in the world but still achieves economic growth. They make use of friendly power to the environment. In addition, they have modern economics with a good infrastructure , and famous tourist locations attract lots of people.
In conclusion, although it is argued that growing economically and protecting the environment is difficult, I believe they still have measures to maintain those 2 things.
