Some people believe that the range of technology available to individuals today is increasing the gap between rich people and poor people, while others say that technology has the opposite effect. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
People have different views about whether the availability and popularity of technology define people’s economic classes. While some people argue that this development will increase a big gap between wealthy people and the poor, I believe that this brings a lot of beneficial effects instead.
There are compelling reasons why people think that modern technologies would create the distinction between rich and poor people in society. Firstly, some poor countries often invest less in technologies and they usually impose a high tax level on high-tech products and Internet usage fees. As a result, only people who are rich in these countries could afford to pay for those products and fees. Additionally, most modern technologies are often distributed in big cities and rarely appear in the countryside where most poor people are living. For example, in Angola, tourists only use the internet in big cities and if they visit the countryside, they will not have internet for use.
However, I believe that the development of technology would create a big revolution which could bring a lot of beneficial effects for humans. Firstly, thanks to the intelligence of modern technologies, the governments of poor countries could call investors around the world to invest in the network systems of their country. For instance, in 2016, the Vietnamese government invested $26 million in the expansion of the telecommunications network across east Africa. In addition, if poor people could access the internet, they will learn a lot of new knowledge, experiences and they can communicate with the whole world. As a consequence, they can get out of poverty, and then they will help other poor people around the world.
In conclusion, although some people believe that this development is increasing the gap between wealthy people and poor people, I would also argue that this would bring a lot of benefits for humans.
